If you're one of the people who doesn't identify that this is not the same old Browns, I'm not going to waste any time convincing you. I'm just going to enjoy the year whether you see it or you don't. What I see heading into camp is an organization that is aligned around winning for the first time in a long time, from the head coach to the front office to the players in that locker room. The mindset shifted. The talk shifted. The standard shifted. And I'm calling it now, before a single padded practice: the Cleveland Browns are going to be the surprise team of the NFL this year. Write it down. Let's get it.

STATMAN

A first, a second, a third, and a Pro Bowler.

In plain English:

When the Browns traded Myles Garrett to the Rams, the return was Jared Verse plus a 2027 first round pick, a 2028 second, and a 2029 third.

Why it matters:

I'm not going to pretend losing Myles doesn't hurt. It does. But look at what came back. V8 is a Pro Bowl edge rusher entering year three, and the picks give this front office ammunition for the next three drafts. You don't get that package for a player when the league thinks you're rebuilding wrong. You get it when you're building something.

Defensive Rookie of the Year, and he wasn't alone. In plain English: last year's draft class produced Carson Schwesinger winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, plus real contributions from Mason Graham, Quinshon Judkins, Dylan Sampson, Harold Fannin Jr., and a fifth-round quarterback who won games down the stretch.

Why it matters:

that's not a class, that's a core. Every one of those names is entering year two, which historically is where the biggest jumps happen. When I say this team is turning the corner, I'm not talking about hope. I'm talking about a room full of second-year players who already showed you who they are.

Fewest receiving yards in the league, then two picks in the first two rounds. In plain English: the 2025 receiver room finished dead last in receiving yards and touchdown catches. The front office answered with KC Concepcion in the first round and Denzel Boston in the second.

Why it matters:

They identified the problem and attacked it with premium capital. That's what a serious organization does. And in Boston specifically, I recall people saying he wasn't twitchy enough. I recall people saying they'd take other guys over him. There was one person who said Denzel Boston is the guy I want. I'll let y'all figure out who said what. Big receiver, comes back to the ball, wins at the high point, doesn't catch with his body. He checked every box I look for, and now everybody else is along for the ride.

THE COMPETITION

Let's talk about the quarterback room, because I'm not going to dance around it. Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson split first team reps all offseason, and the Todd Father is letting it ride into camp. Fine. Competition is the standard, and the standard doesn't skip anybody.

But you ask me who the better quarterback is to move forward with today? It's Shedeur, and it's about feel. Feel for the game is the thing you cannot coach and cannot rehab. The quarterback coach, Mike Bajakian, already told you about his vision, seeing things on the field that don't even resonate with the coach until he goes back to the film and sees Shedeur was right. Jalen Ramsey, an All-Pro, broke down on camera how he set a trap for Shedeur in his sixth career start and Shedeur saw the whole thing coming and didn't take the bait. That's the feeling. That's processing. That's the stuff that shows up before the talent does.

Deshaun's story is about determination, and I respect what it takes to fight back from two Achilles surgeries. Nobody should minimize that. But listen to how the coaches talk about each guy. With Shedeur, it's operation: footwork, progressions, urgency, getting the ball out on time. With Deshaun, it's traits: athleticism, toughness, the will to keep going. One of those conversations is about a quarterback running the offense. Pay attention to which one.

Whoever wins it, wins it on the grass. But mindset first, always. And Shedeur asked for one thing on draft day: a chance. He's got it. That's all he ever needed.

The Browns should blow this season on purpose and lose their way into the quarterback in 2027.

The receipt:

Todd Monken, first press conference energy, kept it real simple: "We're in the development business and the winning business." Then V8 landed in Cleveland and gave you the quote of the summer: "You got two choices, you can either work or you can give up." Then Alex Wright, extended back in November and here his whole career, stood up during the offseason program and told you straight up he won't allow a drop off in the standard, that he'll stop practice himself if he doesn't like what he sees.

What's actually true: they tried to sell us this same lie from 2025 to 2026, that the Browns would lose their way into a quarterback. That didn't work, so they just moved the date. But you cannot tank with people who are made of the right stuff, and everybody they brought into that building came here to win. The head coach said it. The trade acquisition said it. The homegrown vet said it. The belief has to start from within, and this roster has it. The people whose names I won't mention that keep pushing tank talk, they got some soul searching to do.

ACCESS DENIED

What they're saying from the outside: bottom five power rankings. Multiyear rebuild. The defense falls apart without Jim Schwartz. Ugly, low scoring football until 2027 saves them.

What you know if you actually watch this team:

The people writing "the scheme is going to change and derail everything" didn't do the homework. The Browns kept a lot of the position coaches on defense specifically because they don't want the scheme torn down. These are tweaks, not a teardown. And I'm going to keep it honest like I always do, because honesty goes both ways: that defense had things it struggled with under Schwartz. Misdirection gave us fits. Teams force-fed the run and wore us down, and young quarterbacks escaped third and long too often. So the idea that this unit's best football is behind it, that the only direction from here is down? That's somebody who watched a ranking, not a season. There's another level this defense can get to, and the new staff was brought in to find it. Access denied.

THE NEWCLE VERDICT

Verdict:

Real progress, and camp hasn't even opened. New head coach who's a straight shooter about development and winning. A locker room full of guys publicly holding each other to a standard. A year two core with a Defensive Rookie of the Year in the middle of it. Premium picks spent on the biggest weakness. That's what alignment looks like, and alignment is what this organization was missing all those years people were calling it the same old Browns.

The one thing I'm watching at camp: the pads coming on. The Todd Father said it himself, this competition gets decided when the pass rush is live and the joint practices start. That's when feel shows up and the talk goes quiet. I've told you where I stand. Now we let it play out on the grass.

I'm calling my shot for the whole season right here: surprise team of the NFL. Hold me to it, because I'll hold myself to it either way. That's the difference between me and the microphones.
